Victor Vasarely was an innovative artist in the field of Optical Art. The exhibition is a great overview of his style and shows many of his iconic imagery. See this exhibit and explore the permanent exhibits of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is happy to host the exhibition, The Prints of Victor Vasarely.  Victor was an innovative artist in the field of Optical Art.  Early on in his career, he experimented with light, shadow, and perspective. His fascination with light came from visiting the south of France and studying the effects of light.

Vasarely was creative in his use of color and shapes to create fantastical illusions. His use of many layers of cellophane to create depth and suggest movement was innovative and helped shape this new art style.  Victor used small, repeatable geometric shapes and manipulated the colors and shapes into these new optical art pieces.  In the late 1950s, he started using the distinctive checkerboard pattern and concave and convex shapes.  The viewers’ movement helped change the piece and create endless new art pieces.  This simplifying of patterns helped create a universal art language.  By the 1960s, Victor created his “Alphabet Plastique” which was a visual compositional system of elements designed to be combined in limitless ways.

Vasarely’s statement, “Every form is a base for color, every color is the attribute of a form,” exemplifies his art and how he links color and geometric shapes.  His inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition, The Responsive Eye, in 1965 helped solidify his legacy as a leader in the Op Art movement.

Good Vibrations: The Prints of Victor Vasarely is a great overview of his style.  The works range from 1968-1991 and show many of his iconic imagery.  There are several variations on the theme of repeated geometric shapes with a concave/convex bulge in the center and the interplay of various colors.  This exhibit illustrates his innovative and timeless designs.

This exhibition is sponsored in part by Park West Foundation, Allied Arts, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Avedis Foundation and the Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Wissinger Memorial Fund.
