The 1920 silent film “Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde”, starring the famous and handsome matinee idol
of the day John Barrymore---Drew’s grandfather---will be presented Sunday, November 3 at
6:30pm in the church nave. Based on Robert Lewis Stevenson’s novella, the story has been
retold in various film adaptations through the years.

Church music director and organist Dr. Ron Lewis will accompany the film on the church organ, with the assistance of his wife, Jo Lewis. This is the fourth time the Emmanuel Episcopal Church has presented a classic silent movie, all with the Lewis’s talents showcased on the church organ.

Biographer, Margot Peters described Barrymore’s performance in the film as a sensation. She
said “One of the amazing things about his portrayal is that he accomplishes the initial transition from the refined handsome Jekyl to the evil, hideous Hyde with no special makeup, special effects or cutting. In a continuous sequence that took up one thousand feet of film, Barrymore simply turned away from the camera with his hands hiding his face, then turned back to reveal grotesquely distorted features. Later in the film makeup is used to aid his transformation”.

Barrymore was one of the renowned stage actors to make the transformation from stage to
screen successfully. He was actually starring in Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in New York onstage at night, while filming “Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde” at New York’s Famous Players studio in the daytime.

In years past the church has presented the original silent version of “Phantom of the Opera”,
“Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Nosferatu”. The event is free of charge up to the church’s
capacity. Doors will open at 6:00pm.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church is located at 501 North Broadway at the corner of Broadway and
Highland. Parking is located directly behind, or east of the church, or across the street west on Broadway.
